Since the time it opened up to the world in the 19th century and after the great push by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1980s, Shanghai became a mega city, a hub for international trade and finance, with a population of over 24 million inhabitants. Regardless of the numerous environmental measures put in place over the last decade, the air, land and sea pollution, have risen to dramatic heights on par with the city’s gargantuan consumerist needs.
